Committee Mandate

The Subcommittee on Quality Improvement Education and Training, a subcommittee of the Committee on Quality, establishes and coordinates the identification, prioritization, development, and management of resources and programs which aim to improve the quality improvement (QI) education and training available to practicing hematologists. Secondary aims include the advancement of QI scholarship, patient safety, and implementation science and systems. The subcommittee interfaces with the Committee on Educational Affairs, Committee on Practice, Committee on Training, and Trainee Council.

The Subcommittee on Quality Improvement Education and Training conducts the following activities:

·         Identification and Promotion of Relevant Existing QI Educational Offerings

The Subcommittee on Quality Improvement Education and Training is tasked with conducting scheduled environmental scans of existing QI educational offerings with the goal of promoting relevant, high-quality tools and programs. These are then shared as a collection on the ASH website. Relevant resources and programs include those which are hematology-focused, as well as those which provide education on the science of QI that address multi-disciplinary clinical contexts.

The Subcommittee on Quality Improvement Education and Training is also tasked with promoting past and existing ASH initiatives focused on making connections with and advancing QI education and training. These include but are not limited to: ASH-a-Palooza, the Clinical Research Training Institute, the Quality Symposium and Quality Poster Walk during the ASH annual meeting, the Choosing Wisely campaign, online CME modules and training videos, and ASH guideline dissemination activities such as podcasts.

·         Prioritization and Development of New QI Educational Offerings

The Subcommittee on Quality Improvement Education and Training is tasked with prioritizing and developing new QI educational offerings that will support practicing hematologists in advancing their knowledge and application of QI techniques and standards into practice. New offerings include but are not limited to: the creation of a QI toolkit that supports users in planning, implementing, monitoring, and assessing local QI projects; the integration of formal QI science approaches to ASH guideline implementation projects; the development of an in-person or virtual team-based training and mentorship program.

·         Advancement of Quality Improvement Scholarship

The Subcommittee on Quality Improvement Education and Training is tasked with identifying and promoting paths for advancing QI scholarship. Potential opportunities to explore include but are not limited to: the development of a QI-focused series in Blood Advances, tailoring quality-related programming at the ASH annual meeting to promote QI, identifying opportunities to provide financial support for QI scholarship within hematology, and the development of training resources focused on preparing QI for publication and presentation to promotion and tenure committees.

·         Other Activities as Warranted

Members of the Subcommittee on Quality Improvement Education and Training are required to participate in email discussions, regularly scheduled conference calls, and meet in person as deemed necessary. The chair and members of the subcommittee serve two-year, staggered terms with the option for renewal. The structure of the subcommittee includes liaison members from the Committees on Educational Affairs, Committee on Practice, and Committee on Training for terms congruent with service on the parent committee.
